Lesson 1

A warm September afternoon in suburban Hamilton. Enzo is watching a soccer game on tv and Maria, his wife is in the kitchen. The doorbell rings. Enzo automatically stiffens even though he is expecting Maria’s parents to arrive for Sunday dinner. He gets up to answer the door but glances out the living room window to make sure it is their car in the driveway. It seems that the higher you climb the organized crime ladder the more people want to see you dead. One more confirmation through the peephole in the door and he lets in his in-laws.

Closing the door quickly behind them, Enzo welcomes the guests and Maria arrives from the kitchen wiping her hands on her apron. Maria’s mother goes into the kitchen to help with the dinner and Enzo pours himself and his father-in-law, Gino, each a glass of whiskey. They chat while watching the game for a while and the subject comes around to golf.

“Hey, why don’t we get out for a game one day this week?” asks Gino. “Not much of the season left and we haven’t played together once.”

“You know I’d love to Gino,” replies Enzo. “But I’m not sure. Things are crazy busy these days.”

“Come on, it’ll give you a chance to try out that new set of clubs Maria bought you.”

“Let me think about it and get back to you,” answers Enzo unconvincingly. Enzo’s phone rings and he excuses himself going into the study.

Gino goes into the kitchen and suggest to Maria that she encourage her husband to take a day off and play a round of golf with him. Maria lowers her voice and explains to Gino that she thinks the reason Enzo hasn’t been playing golf recently is because of the security risk. He knows there are some people out there that would like to see him dead and the golf course would be a perfect place for a hit.

“Maybe we could bring his bodyguard along?” suggests Gino.

“I don’t think he would go along with that,” replies Maria. “You know Enzo. He doesn’t like to appear afraid. He thinks people might take it as a sign of weakness. Better not push it Dad.”
